All About Packrafts

Packrafting is a pleasurable and simple way to experience the natural world, an accessible way to become involved in paddle sports, and an enjoyable physical activity that can be pursued with friends and family. Packrafts are excellent boats for wilderness excursions, and great for both beginner and experienced whitewater paddlers.

Packrafts are becoming more and more popular among paddlers and wilderness trippers. In recent years, companies like Alpackaraft have made incredible advances in the design and features of these boats, making them increasingly versatile, durable, and fun to paddle.

Packrafts are:

  • Stable on the water

  • Comfortable for long paddles

  • Fun and engaging/responsive boats

  • Capable of carrying heavy loads/lots of gear

  • Durable and very lightweight

  • Easy to transport

  • Great for beginner whitewater paddlers learning the basics

Packraft Build and Specs: A typical packraft is made of a durable nylon material which is lightweight but surprisingly tough. Packrafts weigh between 7 and 11 lbs and when deflated take up about 25 litres of space - small enough to carry on a hiking trip for a multi-sport adventure. They range in size from about 8 ft to 12 ft in length, so generally they are somewhat bigger than whitewater kayaks, but much smaller than classic multi-person whitewater rafts.

Packrafts can be outfitted in a variety of ways for whitewater paddling. At Packraft Adventure Canada we will generally use packrafts with a whitewater spray deck and skirt - similar to the system used in kayaking - to keep water from entering the boat while we paddle a rapid. Seats are comfy and inflatable, like the packraft itself. Inflating a boat takes just a few minutes for a practiced hand. These craft are paddled using a double blade paddle.

One of the major advantages of packrafting is the ability to carry lots of gear on your excursion. Packing for a multi-day adventure in a whitewater kayak would be nearly impossible as there is little to no storage space. But finding a boat that gives you the thrill and intensity of paddling rapids low to the water and deep in the waves and the option to be on the river for weeks at a time is a real treat!

Packrafts are incredibly stable which allows beginner whitewater paddlers the chance to learn the basics of paddling rapids without the challenge of frequent flipping and swimming that is typical in kayaking and even canoeing. A perfect way to get into river paddling - though a swim or two is still a likely outcome!

Packraft Adventure Canada is proud to provide guests with packrafts made by Alpackaraft in Mancos, Colorado. This incredible company designs and builds the highest quality packrafts.

Just like mountain biking, alpine skiing, and trail running: look where you want to go, not at the obstacles. In fact, that might make a good Practice for life: focus on the passages, not the obstacles, to living.
